More Than Words: The Role of Typography in UI Design

The Unsung Hero of User Experience

    T. Koster

Good typography is invisible, but bad typography is everywhere. This essay highlights the critical role of typography in creating clear, usable, and beautiful user interfaces.

    T

ypography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. In UI design, it's one of the most powerful tools a designer has. Effective typography establishes a visual hierarchy, sets the overall tone of a product, and directly impacts usability. This essay goes beyond simply choosing a font, and delves into the principles of hierarchy (headings, body text, captions), line length, line height, and typographic scale. We will examine how a well-structured typographic system can reduce cognitive load and guide the user's attention, ultimately creating a more seamless and enjoyable experience.
